Alpha-Arbutin a glycosylated hydroquinone extracted from the bearberry plant in the genus Arctostaphylos

Applied topically, it inhibits tyrosinase and thus prevents the formation of melanin. 

Arbutin is therefore used as a skin-lightening agent. Very tiny amounts of arbutin are found in wheat, pear skins, and some other foods. It is also found in Viburnum opulus and Bergenia crassifolia. Arbutin was also produced by an in vitro culture of Schisandra chinensis.

α-Arbutin is a differential isomer of β -arbutin. Its chemical name is 4-hydroxyphenyl-α-D- glucopyranoside, and its glycosidic bond is opposite to β -arbutin in space.

Arbutin whitens skin by inhibiting melanin production and deposition.Compared with β -arbutin, α -arbutin can penetrate the skin at lower concentrations and inhibit the activity of tyrosine more effectively without affecting the proliferation of skin cells.

As a popular safe whitening raw material at domestic and overseas, it blocks the formation of melanin and reduces cytochrome deposition through its combination with tyrosinase.

The chemical properties of α -arbutin are more stable than  β -arbutin, which can be more easily added to a variety of  whitening skin care formulas.
